Three Big Complaints About Custom Built Bedroom Furniture

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

Most owners like their custom built bedroom furniture. However, even the most rabid fans of the fitted bedroom will admit that their bespoke wardrobes are not perfect. One big problem is the somewhat formidable price tag. Snobs will say it separates the haves from the have-nots. But more than a few middle-class customers of this type of furniture have the costs included as part of their home purchase loan, and some pay for it using a home renovation loan. Either way, the first scratch is a truly heart-rending event. So is the second, from personal experience. Admittedly, after a year or two, most of us become somewhat inured to it, although those of us who inherit the “handyman” genes from our forefathers have an advantage because we know how to touch it up again.

The second complaint is not quite so easy to resolve. Custom bedroom furniture is not something you can pick up and move around, especially not the fitted wardrobe. If you suddenly discover that it is occupying valuable real estate in your bedroom, there isn’t really anything you can do about it. About the only thing you can do is to pay the designer who built your wardrobe to switch from a hinged door to a sliding door. This will free up some of the space normally allocated for the door to swing out when you open your wardrobe. Obviously, this trick only works if you do not already have a sliding door wardrobe.

Not many people buy custom kids bedroom furniture. There is good reason for this. Good custom made bedroom furniture can last two or three decades, maybe even longer, in an adult’s bedroom. But children are notoriously hard on furniture. Furniture in a child’s bedroom may need to be replaced within a few years due to excessive wear and tear. This is a terrible waste when you have custom designed wardrobes installed, as more than one parent has discovered. It’s as if you bought a Rolex, then frequently got involved in bar-room brawls, and now want to toss it away because it is battered. Doesn’t exactly exhibit good common sense.

Custom built bedroom furniture should be considered an investment. It is an integral part of your house, and should be carefully thought out before you commit yourself.
