If you look at traditional table lamps and lamp shades you will see that square lamp shades have been around for a long time. They differ from other shapes of lamp shade in that they have four distinct sides and the gap at the bottom and top of the lamp shade is a square rather than a circle, as you would find with a drum lamp shade. They are not completely square, however, in that the sides of the lamp shade generally slope towards the top of the shade, giving them a quality more like a square based pyramid, which has had its top cut off.
These traditional square lamps shades look good with all kinds of classic lamp bases, such as Chinese vases, brass beaten shapes and solid bronze or bronze plated sculptures and they are generally made of standard lamp shade materials such as cotton or silk.

The new square shaped lamp shades may also by made of the same types of fabrics as the traditional ones but they can also be found in more contemporary looking materials such as perspex or glass. They are also generally in the shape of a cube rather than a cut off pyramid. The cube shape is often mirrored in a more geometrically shaped base.
These modern square lamp shades look like they are an integral part of the whole lamp, matching the base perfectly and so they are often for sale only with a whole lamp. They are found not just in table lamp form, but also as ceiling lighting fixtures and also as floor lamps, which are often made to match. However, you can sometimes do better by not having everything matching with something as stunning as some of these lights with their architectural lines. It is far better to have one piece stand out as something special, than to have three and for the eye not know where to look.
You will see these square lamps in many contemporary interiors and in glossy interior design magazines as they are very popular at the moment.
