The Best Large Metal Patio Covers

Posted by Modern Homes in Furniture, Garden

Aluminum patio covers or steel designs can be used depending on the strength required. In regions where there is heavy snowfall, high winds and inclement weather many months of the year you may want to consider steel beams and not just the lighter aluminum ones.

The best patio cover will depend on whether the structure will be freestanding or attached to a wall or existing roof, and if the style is to be a pergola or a gazebo that rests on a deck or garden or if it will be used with an awning that may be permanent or retractable. Steel metal is best for large structures that require more support, like long narrow backyards or patios that run the length of a house. Aluminum, vinyl and fabric options can be chosen for roofing even if the supports are steel.

Aluminum is Cheaper

The thing about large metal patio covers is that they are cheaper, especially if you need to cover a large area. The downside is that metal will rust and needs some maintenance while aluminum doesn’t. For a long-term covering that will be sturdy and practical use as much aluminum as possible to avoid the work of painting later on.

Installation

If you are considering doing the work yourself you’ll need a contractor to work with steel beams and foundations. But the aluminum roofing kits are usually easy to install on your own.

Heat Factor

You should also consider the heat factor when building outdoor patio covers that will be enclosed. Metal will heat up faster and retain the heat inside if the structure is not ventilated very well. Aluminum heats up and cools down quickly and can be easier to regulate, many kits include special ventilation systems.

A Mix of Metal for Strength and Aluminum for Durability and Easy Care

In the final analysis, if you are considering large metal patio covers because you need a strong steel support structure that is probably a good choice, but seriously check into the alumawood and other aluminum brands of roofing to keep the structure cool, easy to maintain and faster and better for installation. It is up to you to discuss with your contractor or home improvement specialist how you can incorporate a metal frame with an aluminum cover or roof to get the best of both worlds.
