Going off to college can be a fun and exciting time in any young adult’s life, and an expensive and costly time for mom and dad. There are many things that a college freshman will need for his or her first dorm room. It is always advisable to check with the college for a list of recommended items and items they do not allow such as hot plates, air conditioners or space heaters.
Some colleges offer loft kits for a price to build a loft area in the dorm room, some do have bed but they are usually cheap metal double beds, or more often than not twin beds. It is a good idea to establish the bed situation as it can be one of the more expensive decisions to make, and takes up the most space. Once you have settles on what kind of bed the student will use, it is easier to plan the rest of the area, how much space there is to work with. If a loft makes the most sense, the college will provide the lumber and hardware needed but not the mattress, and they are generally the size of a twin bed. Cheap metal double beds are not always a bad option as they can be taken down and moved around easily. However, many dorm rooms are too small to accommodate the size of a double bed.
Once the bedding is taken care of, it is easier to determine the rest of the freshman’s needs. There are a few more essentials that a college student may need for their dorm room including a good alarm clock, microwave, quality computer or laptop, shower toiletries and towels, laundry items, a compact refrigerator and tableware, school supplies and any favorite decorations that will help their dorm feel like their own.
College can be a very expensive venture, and whether you cut costs by opting for cheap metal double beds or sleeping on an air mattress on the floor, it is well worth the time, effort and expense.
