Whether used for floors, countertops or other surfaces, marble is one of the most attractive and elegant finishes available. Cleaning marble without scratching it can be a challenge, although cleaning and maintaining it properly will ensure that it keeps its appearance and adds value to your home.
Marble is a fairly soft stone – not as hard as granite, which it is sometimes mistaken for – and is easily damaged. For everyday cleaning, a soft washcloth and warm water will suffice; marble can also be cleaned with a solution of warm water and baking soda; use about three tablespoons for every four cups of water. The solution should be left to dry for a couple of hours and then wiped off with a soft cloth. Always wipe the surface dry – never allow it to air dry; this will prevent spotting.
For more thorough cleaning, you should clean marble surfaces occasionally with a nonabrasive cleaner designed specifically to be used on natural stone. You can put the shine back in a dull marble floor with polish and a marble cleaner, although marble should be cleaned only with a cleaner that has a pH of seven or eight. Waxing a marble floor also helps to keep the surface shiny and prevents dirt from being absorbed, although you should only use hard wax to prevent discoloring.
Never use any abrasive cleaners, acid products or even vinegar on marble surfaces. It’s also a good idea to take preventative measures against dirt and damage, by using throw rugs, mats and coasters where necessary. Don’t put hot pans or plates on marble surfaces and wipe up any spills or stains on marble as soon as you can; marble is porous and absorbs liquid.
If you have a large area of marble or just don’t want to tackle it yourself, there are cleaning companies that specialize in marble. When thinking of how to clean marble showers, remember that like with any marble, never use abrasive cleaners. Cleaning is worth taking the time and trouble to ensure this beautiful stone keeps its looks for many years to come.
