Eco Friendly Bedroom Decorating

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration, Home

As a society, we are becoming more conscientious about our planet and the importance of doing our part now so future generations can enjoy the planet in years to come This translates into changing some habits, using eco friendly products and materials, and doing as much as possible to lessen our footprint in the planet. Some environmentally friendly products and materials might not be so cheap. For many people who are trying to become greener, it may not be possible to change everything at once. Becoming greener takes time and effort – it does not happen from one day to the next. As you live your life, and have to replace products and things, opt for eco-friendly products – one thing at time, this is a budget friendly approach. This can be applied to decorating your home as well. Start one room at a time, for example, the bedroom – where you retreat to relax and sleep after a hard day of work. This is the perfect room to start your green efforts.

Depending on what you need in the room and your finances, set up a budget for your project. Choose a mood or theme for the room. Scout your entire home for items that you can use and are perfect under that theme. Try to follow this method – Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle – in that order. Reduce your need for buying new elements for the bedroom by becoming aware of the things you have and can reuse. By painting, rearranging, modifying objects, and being inventive and creative you can reuse and repurpose items to use in your new décor design.

Declutter the room and donate the excess to charity to give it a second chance. Once you have decluttered and keeping only the necessary items for your décor come up with a plan on paper. By planning your design and trying different rearrangements, you will save money on materials and on having to redo later. This will give you an idea of the materials that you will have to buy. Divide your budget according to the different areas to address, depending on your design.

If you are using paint, buy paint that has low VOC’s. This stands for volatile organic compounds, which are not good for you or the environment. If in need to buy carpet, follow the same rules and buy one that is low in VOC’s and toxic dyes. If buying flooring, use a brand that is made from sustainable sources. Buy bedding that is organic and free of bleaches and dyes or pesticides and only buy the size mattress that you need.. If possible, buy bedding or items from handmade sources where funds are going to help the artisans or tribes who make them. Before buying an item, scout garage sales, flea markets, and other sources to give items a second chance. These tips will help the planet, but also your wallet.
