Do It Yourself Bathroom Mold Removal

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

Mold can be notorious when it comes to bathrooms. With the constant moisture from showering, bathing, toilet flushing in a small space, it’s the perfect breeding ground for mold growth. And where there’s a fungus problem, there’s the need for mold removal.

Before you begin however, you’ll want to repair any leaks or problems that may have caused the growth in the first place. The number one reasons for mold growth is moisture. They thrive on it and will continue to thrive until you fix the source of the moisture problem.

Then, assess whether you need to hire a professional to do the work or if you can do the job yourself. As a general rule anything more than 10 square feet of damage needs the help of a professional.

If the damage is minimal enough you can do it yourself, you’ll need to get rid of the growth using a bathroom mold removal product. You’ll want to avoid using standard household bleach since the chemical fumes can be harmful to your health and bleaching the mold won’t permanently kill it anyway.

In addition, you’ll want to be sure to invest in a good pair of rubber gloves, paper surgical mask and eye goggles for the cleanup. You may also need to purchase a plastic sheet to block off areas of the room that haven’t been affected by the toxic fungus. And, although it may seem like a good idea to circulate the air, avoid running any fans during the cleanup process as it can cause the spores from the mold to spread to other parts of your home.

Next, follow the directions provided by the manufacturer of the bathroom mold removal product. Then, once you’ve thoroughly cleaned and removed all traces of the black fungus, you should open windows if the weather is permitting and use fans to dry out the room. Also, a dehumidifier may be helpful in removing moisture from the air if you have one.

And finally, when it comes to bathrooms, it’s often best to skip using wallpaper on your walls since it can trap moisture and allows for the perfect area for mold to grow. Instead, you might want to consider using tiles on the walls painting them with a paint that is resistant to mold to help minimize moisture on the walls and prevent the further need for mold removal or more serious problems that may lead to needing the help of a professional.
