Black Chandeliers – Make a Dynamic Change in Your Home

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

When we talk about modern day designs, black and white are considered to be the top of the line in accessorizing our home. The lustrous characteristic of these colors draws an elegant effect to change the look we had for many years now. No matter how simple a house is, there is a certain part that would give an edge and beauty emphasis.

Moreover, you might get doubts as how would chandelier work for a modern designed house. Have no fear as you can shop in local stores near your place or seek over the internet with the many modern style chandeliers they could offer. Black chandeliers with classic style are very flexible that can go along well with both modern and classic home décor.

Contemporary designs that are truly unique could best have unusual shapes of chandelier. Obviously, it will set a good impression for your proposed transition of a modern home rather than the common shapes of chandelier. In addition to this the black color will complete an elegant impact for the said item.

However, choosing a very unique chandelier can sometimes be misleading especially when setting comparisons on other inclusions like specific styles. Don’t get dismay because you can still achieve an up to date look. There are classic style black chandeliers that you can select on for that perfect twist with a much safer style that will go through your taste. Chandeliers will always give a superb outcome no matter how simple it is.

If we seek for a total change in home, we usually disregard the lighting and may seem to think that it won’t need such change anymore. We think that decorations are more important than the basic lighting. Just view your home in awhile and think of the center point to be changed; you might have local bulbs situated on the ceiling but how about replacing it with a far distinctive look that black chandeliers could offer, be it in your bedroom or dining area. Isn’t it amazingly good?

Our home is not just a dwelling place for us, we sometimes would at least think of how it can be impressive for our house guests. A classic chandelier can draw an excellent impression and elegance but a black chandelier would define a more than enough accommodation to have. It is an inclusion that will leave guests in amusement; they might even consider placing one at their own place.

Lighting indeed is mistakenly unnoticed, but what we forget to think is that even the smallest detail can create a dynamic change for our home. Just as though, black chandeliers can be your utmost item to be added when redecorating. You’ll surely make not only changes but a fine transition. So now is the time to do what is right for your living and make the most out of your dreamed home.

Blackout Curtains For The Complete Home Theater Experience

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Many families have a passion for watching movies at home. It is now possible to replicate a real movie theater experiece in your own home with a good size HD TV, nice surround sound audio system, comfortable furniture and of course some blackout curtains. When we go to the movies one of the things we notice and enjoy is how dark it is. This is because there are no windows and the lights are first dimmed then shut off completely. It is meant to create an enjoyable and entertaining experience, to give the screen complete focus. Total darkness gets the audience in the mood to relax and enjoy a enhancing their movie watching experience. Besides setting the mood, once the lights turn off people immediately quiet down and focus on the screen. To have a cinema in your own home, finding a solution to blockout outside light coming through the windows is one of the top three most important things to transform your living room to a true cinema.

The best thing you can do is try to hide the windows completely. Covering just the window wouldn’t be sufficient enough because light can still shine in through the sides. What I mean by hiding the window is to cover the entire wall that the window is on by hanging the curtain from the ceiling to the floor and from wall to wall. This will look very nice because it will give a stage or theatrical appearance. Your goal is to have a pitch dark room at any time of the day and this is only achievable if you use 100% blackout curtains. The good news is that you can find some that are lined and  specifically designed for this purpose .

Some might immediately think that they would need to get a black color but that is not at all necessary. There are a variety of dark and soft colors that can still darken up a room as much as possible as long as they were designed to do so. There is no reason why every homeowner can’t make their own home cinema. The things you need are quite basic. When you are ready to create one in your basement, the guest house or even the garage getting the right blackout curtain will only take a fraction of the budget.

Saving Money With Solar Driveway Lighting

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Driveway lights are a fantastic way to improve the look of the front area of your home. Many believe it is something that only the wealthy would consider spending money on. The cost of the lights themselves and the ongoing power costs can be quite high, but they don’t have to be.

Solar driveway lighting is a very popular method of achieving the stylish and ambient look of a lit driveway at a fraction of the cost. The popularity of such lighting means that it is affordable and easily accessible. Most hardware stores and lighting stores stock a wide range of solar lights for outdoor use. Even second hand stores, discount stores or dollar stores often stock solar lights for outdoor use – even some supermarkets! So the lights themselves can be very affordable. They are also able to be purchased individually so you may only buy one or two to begin with and increase the number of driveway or garden lights when you can afford to.

Traditional driveway lights are linked to a power source via a cable usually laid underground. Some of these lights need to be installed by a professional electrician, which is of course at an additional cost to you. Then you have the ongoing cost of supplying the lights with power on a daily basis. Depending on the strength and quality of the light and bulbs this can mean a big increase on your monthly power bill.

Solar powered driveway lights are not linked to each other or a power source by any cable. They are completely individual therefore are able to be secured in the ground, along your driveway or in your garden by nearly anyone. Each individual light has its own solar panel. It charges during daylight hours, even on cloudy days, to provide light during the night. Most will charge to provide up to around 10hours of light, depending on the quality of the light and bulb. They are completely self sufficient and once in place there will be absolutely no ongoing power charges, that will save you 100% of the running costs of traditional alternatives.

So if you are looking at purchasing driveway lighting or outdoor lighting and want an affordable option, make sure you consider solar powered lights before making any purchases.

Decorating your Home with Brass Sconces

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

When decorating any room of the home, it is always important to consider the importance of light fittings, with a popular choice being the antique style brass sconces to adorn your walls that can include single or multiple light holders. Depending on the amount of lights that you will want in each brass sconce will obviously depend on the price. They were originally designed with the idea of the candle holder in mind that used to decorate houses in days gone by. You can actually buy a brass wall sconce that doesn’t use electric bulbs. They will just carry candles like their ancestors used to do and light the room naturally, but generally the modern electric bulb holder is the more popular and practical choice.

Some designs make it possible to change the position of the fixture, so you can have light facing towards a different angle, whereas the more basic are made to stay in a fixed position of facing upwards. They offer elegance to any wall and can be found in almost all lighting stores or many electrical stores, and Internet websites. You can even find some excellent deals on various auction websites. If you like to go out and shop, you should be able to find great bargains in auction houses, antique shops or even second hand shops.

The elegant fittings can compliment the rest of the décor to the room and can also compliment other furniture that you have. They look great and are easy to maintain with just simple dusting. Energy efficient bulbs can also be used, lower wattage bulbs or the brighter powered bulbs. Fitting them to the wall is relatively simple but if you don’t have any idea about electrics, always ask a professional or some you know has knowledge with light fittings.

Anyone looking for the more vintage feel when decorating any room of the house will find that most brass sconces are for you. Prices can range from $70 for the basic design and can reach to over $400. The more expensive the design, the more added features it will have for example up to 15 or 20 light fittings, or they will have a more polished finish. The design will also be more extravagant as more care will have been taken in the manufacturing of the light fitting.

Interior Design Tips: The Brushed Nickel Chandelier

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Interior design as a whole is meant to enrich your life, your home, and your space. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to understand the benefits of working with your design inside your space and learning the benefits of using matching or complimentary metals like nickel. Brushed nickel has a sophisticated and welcoming look to it that can invite people to stay a while in your home.

If you’re thinking, “How can a doorknob do that,” we urge you to see the larger picture. In specific, a brushed nickel chandelier in an entry way or dining room can really set a different type of atmosphere and set your home and space design apart from the traditional and sometimes overdone look of the quoizel chandelier.

Like most chandelier options, nickel has a variety of styles to choose from and can compliment any room in your house with ease. Choosing a particular design to suit your needs will first involve having an overall style idea or desire. If you’re looking for a chic, sophisticated look you should consider a brushed nickel chandelier that has a clean and uncomplicated look to it. With simple lines and a more traditional lampshade or candle assembly, this type of lighting can help define your space with ease.

If you’re looking for something that’s a conversation starter, you can easily find that as well. Find intricate designs and shade-free candles that provide more light than shaded versions and you will do well. Aside from these facts, it’s best to first shop around and get a general idea of what’s openly available to you. This can refer to online and in store shopping as well as thinking of ideas yourself that you would like to see made from scratch. Aside from this, you should also consider the overall space you’re looking to put the chandelier in.

Decorating Your Home with Contemporary Style Gooseneck Lighting

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

If you think of gooseneck lamps as those chunky little lamps that students often place on their desk you are mistaken. Well, those commonplace gooseneck desk lamps definitely do still exist and they continue to do a fantastic job of illuminating text books and notebooks.  However, there are many different types of gooseneck lamps on the market these days, including some of very stunning appearance.

Designers have taken the versatility of the gooseneck lamp and changed it into something that is not only useful but also highly decorative.  You can find many beautifully designed gooseneck lamps that would look great in your living room on a side table. They are useful when you wish to read or do other intricate work in your living room as you can position them beside you and turn the head of the lamp to illuminate whatever you are working on. At the same time, the design is such that the lamp looks simply splendid and does not detract from the overall décor of the room at all. Practical and beautiful at the same time!

There are also many splendid gooseneck floor lamps to choose from. Prices range from the not so expensive to the truly designer priced lamps.  They are very useful in a living room setting, particularly if you can find one that closely matches the overall décor of your room. You can have a floor lamp placed directly behind your chair so that the light shines over your shoulder giving you a great reading light.  Alternatively, you can place the lamp in such a way that it shines and accents a wall hanging or some other decoration. The neck of the lamp can be turned wherever you like.

Of course there are also the purely decorative lamps, such as the Adesso gooseneck floor lamp with five separate ‘heads’, or the delicately shaped and tinted Eternity floor lamp.  Make the most of this fantastically versatile lamp by including it in your overall decorating plans.

The New Shape Square Lamp Shades

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

If you look at traditional table lamps and lamp shades you will see that square lamp shades have been around for a long time. They differ from other shapes of lamp shade in that they have four distinct sides and the gap at the bottom and top of the lamp shade is a square rather than a circle, as you would find with a drum lamp shade. They are not completely square, however, in that the sides of the lamp shade generally slope towards the top of the shade, giving them a quality more like a square based pyramid, which has had its top cut off.

These traditional square lamps shades look good with all kinds of classic lamp bases, such as Chinese vases, brass beaten shapes and solid bronze or bronze plated sculptures and they are generally made of standard lamp shade materials such as cotton or silk.

The new square shaped lamp shades may also by made of the same types of fabrics as the traditional ones but they can also be found in more contemporary looking materials such as perspex or glass. They are also generally in the shape of a cube rather than a cut off pyramid. The cube shape is often mirrored in a more geometrically shaped base.

These modern square lamp shades look like they are an integral part of the whole lamp, matching the base perfectly and so they are often for sale only with a whole lamp. They are found not just in table lamp form, but also as ceiling lighting fixtures and also as floor lamps, which are often made to match. However, you can sometimes do better by not having everything matching with something as stunning as some of these lights with their architectural lines. It is far better to have one piece stand out as something special, than to have three and for the eye not know where to look.

You will see these square lamps in many contemporary interiors and in glossy interior design magazines as they are very popular at the moment.

Shedding New Light on Multi Light Pendant Lighting

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Pendant lighting provides a home owner with a great way to light up an otherwise dark dining area. Multi light pendant lighting adds considerably to the appeal of such fixtures. Several appealing pendant combinations can be found in the Pottery Barn catalogue for January 2010.

One page shows Calhoun multi light pendants above a Kirkwood pedestal dining table. The two round globes of the paired pendant lights complement the round shape of the table. Each of those hand blown globes has a bronze cap. The pendant lights hang from bronze chains. When used with filament bulbs, this pair looks especially striking.

A second page of the same catalogue offers details on the classic track lighting system. This system allows a pair of pendants to hang from a single bar. According to the PB catalogue, there are two types of tracks–a Chase Pendant track and a Mini Morton Pendant track.

A line voltage design allows for placement of a single light at any point along each track. For multiple lights, there can be a minimum of ten inches between any two lights on the same track. A picture in the January publication underlines the flexibility of the tracking system. That picture shows two white lights above a long kitchen table.

On a third page, a different kitchen table sits under a pair of Bensen ceramic multi light pendants. The makers of this pendant have made an effort to copy the look of pleated fabric. That accounts for the ribbed appearance of each white pendant light.

Each light hangs from a six inch covered cord. Each light has a steel canopy with cuff, both of which have a bronze finish. That canopy and cuff sits atop a ceramic shade with a 14-inch diameter.

This pairing of hanging lights offers any homeowner an attractive way to light a kitchen table or a breakfast bar.

Multi Light Island Pendants – Enhance The Decor Of Your House

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Lighting not only adds brightness to any area but if illuminated innovatively it can add a new dimension to any mundane place and can even make it look exotic. There is a great range of lights available for commercial and residential purposes, which are not only cost efficient but are mesmerizing for any onlooker.

Multi light island pendants are the perfect option if you are planning to brighten up your house with some elegant and bright lights. These lights are designed to provide light for island like spaces. Using these unique lights in commercial areas such as bars and restaurants, a spectacular view can be created. Traditionally these multi light island pendants were used to be hung over the kitchen to emphasis the lighting in the area but with upcoming trends and interplay of styles, these lights has been put to more use. A contemporary light pendant can be placed over a kitchen counter, the dining area and even the exterior of the house to lend a rustic feel to it.

There is a wide assortment of designs and materials that can be explored when choosing a multi light island pendant for your abode. Ranging from wrought iron to glass and the stylish aluminum and crystal frames, everything is easily accessible. However, one needs to keep the following things in mind when opting for an island pendant

* Consider the area where the light has to be placed. For a larger area a two or three bulb light can be used for a compact zone, it is better to place a single bulb light
* Always try to buy the material that has a great finish and is durable at the same time. There are products that are visually fascinating but do not have good shelf life. Avoid investing in these

A well crafted antique light or a rustic frame can add some drama to the dark area with a dim reflection and loads of appeal. Remember to browse the internet for trendy styles of multi light pendants and spark your imagination with some classic illumination styles.

Votive Candle Chandelier – Fill A Room With Romantic Light

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Sometimes a homeowner hopes to create a more welcoming environment in a home’s dining area. In that case, the owner of a private residence could decide to go online and shop for a votive candle chandelier. That online shopper would not need to purchase an extra set of matches when ordering that particular lighting fixture.

The votive candles in that banging light are not real candles; they are faux votive like candles. Yet the fake nature of those votive lighting elements does not eliminate their ability to reveal some hard truths. The pretend votive can reveal important information about the nature of chandelier sconces.

Each of those sconces has interior wiring. That interior wiring allows electricity to flow into the make believe candle. Thus a flip of the switch can send electricity into the fake candle holders and into the candle, and it can light up that make believe “natural” light source.

Restoration Hardware has put dozens of faux candles on the base of each of the fixtures in its Pillar Candle Lighting Collection. Those fake candles come in different sizes, and no base from the Restoration Hardware factory is given a single type of make believe candle. There are three to four different sized candles on each base of that Hardware Lighting Collection.

Those pretend candles, elements of different sizes, sit on a metal tray, a tray that is attached to four metal rods. The rods can come together at a point, the point at which the Sloane Chandelier attaches to the ceiling.

The tray under those rods can be either round or rectangular. The size of that metal base determines the cost of the hanging light. The light with the smallest base costs only $935. The light with the largest base can run as much as $2035.

Regardless of their cost, each of those hanging fixtures can fill a room with a warm and romantic light.

How To Illuminate A Room With Recessed Lighting

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

While recessed lights are generally used for highlighting a specific area of the home, when used intelligently they can also be used as the main source of light for a large room.  There are some tricks and tips that I want to offer up in this post that can help you do just that, as well as some pitfalls to avoid!

Before considering using recessed lights in a large room, take a look at your ceiling height.  If your ceiling is tall (10 feet and up) this style of light might not be a good choice because of how much of a pain it is to change the light bulbs.  Remember that when one light burns out, the rest are going to go soon!  This can be reduced by using very efficient and long lasting bulbs, but the will eventually burn out.  This is definitely not a good idea for those who don’t do well on ladders!

The simplest way to illuminate a room with recessed lights is to create a perimeter of can lights.  This works best in small rooms because it makes them feel much larger, but is also very effective in regular and large size rooms.  The center of the room may end up being a bit darker than the rest, but that is easily remedied with a lamp or other small light fixture.

To get the most from this method, the lights have to be properly spaced.  The general rule is that for every inch the light is across, a foot is added to its spacing.  If you are lighting an entire room, five or six inch lights are probably going to be used, so four inch fixtures need to be four feet apart, five inch fixtures need to be five feet apart, and so on.

This is the most effective way to light an entire room with this style of fixtures.  There are other ways to do it, but it ends up using a heck of a lot more fixtures than sticking to the perimeter does.

Chandelier Light Is the Perfect Illumination for Interior Design

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

Illumination is a vital compliment of the interior design in your house. If you set up the illumination correctly, it can highlight all of your other decor features like color choices and furniture that you are fond of. A black chandelier is a wonderful method of illuminating your interior design and as we are about to illustrate this doesn’t necessarily have to include ballrooms and other large rooms.

The wide variety of chandelier lights which are available nowadays will make it easy for you to select a look that perfectly goes with your interior decor. You don’t have to limit yourself to conventional glass chandeliers, you’ll find a lot of designs that have trendy accents to light up your spaces. The most modern chandelier designs usually are comprised of clean lines and simple accents. This is because modern design favors minimalism. However, you can literally find a design to suit your taste.

It’s best to objectively view the space you are looking to put your chandelier light in and make the decision if it is a space that should have harsh bright light, for example a kitchen, or an intimate area that should have soft lighting. You might discover when researching chandeliers that they vary widely in how brave they are, this is usually due to how many bulbs are in them. Obviously, the fewer bulbs, the dimmer they will be. But remember that a lot of goals will require more electricity, and cost more when the bulbs burn out and must be replaced.

If you should install a chandelier light you must remember to extremely important rules. First and foremost you have to ensure that it is installed correctly and that the ceiling beams are strong enough to bear its weight. Some ceilings have beams that you can’t see until you go up in the attic. You can use those beams also to help take the way of the chandelier. Chandeliers with a lot of accents can be very heavy; be sure you install it properly.

Secondly, when maintaining a chandelier it’s important to clean it often, or at least twice a year. They tend to get coated in a greasy dirt that is hard to clean off and make spotlight less brilliant. The best chandelier lighting that is available to you can be a fabulous asset to any domicile. By carefully selecting it installing it and maintaining it, you will ensure that your chandelier will grace your home and contribute to the value of your home for a long time.

Pendant Lights – A Versatile Lighting Option

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

You see pendant lights used in houses and businesses more often in the past few years. They are a unique lighting source that has many uses. You will see them in many different rooms lighting many specific areas.

A pendant light is a light fixture suspended on a rod from the ceiling. The rod covers the wiring from the box to the fixture. There is a decorative metal plate that covers the electrical box on the ceiling. Pendant lights can be singular and two or more lights in a series. The shaft on the fixture can be adjusted to different heights. They can hang at equal heights or go up and down depending on your taste and the location of the lights.

Pendant lights often are found over islands in kitchens and peninsulas. These lights are generally in a series of three or four separate units. In the kitchen, they can be above the sink or stove as well. They also can be the main lights in the room.

In the bathroom a pendant light can hang above a vanity or add elegance to a whirlpool or garden tub. These lights have pinpoint lighting in mind. They are an attractive way of lighting special locations in the bathroom.

Other rooms with high ceilings are a good spot for these lights. This manner of lighting brings the light closer to where you need it. The pendant can also have an angled head so the light shines where you need it most.

Pendant lights can shine light on a special piece of furniture or display. China cabinets or buffets are furniture pieces that might be highlighted. Special antiques on display may have a pendant above. A light like this can also show off trophies and awards.

This style of light fixtures can have many different lamp shades. They can be simple painted metal hoods, have fancy glass shades or square lamp shades.  A shade adds distinction to the pendant fixture.

The Evolution Of Candles And Candle Holders

Posted by Modern Homes in Lighting

The candle may be a primitive device, but it is still used today when our wonderful electricity stops working. A candle is made up of two main things, the wax and the wick, which is basically a bit of string that runs through the center of the wax. Set the wick alight with a match or lighter and you have your light. This is clearly very basic stuff and most people will know this, or so you would hope. In this article we are going to be taking a basic look at different candles, their uses and how they have evolved over the years.

There are many different types of candle – votive, hurricane and tea lights to name a few. There are even different types of wax – bees wax, paraffin wax and so on. Some candles are different because of their dimensions and others because of their shapes or their colors.

Before electricity the candle was used to light up our homes and streets. Many years have passed since this time, we still use candles but for a different reason, for decoration. At our dining table we place candles in crystal candle holders. Or we could use a hurricane candle holder and place them on a console table or at the fireplace in our living room. The candles we use at home in these stands are chosen for their looks and to suit the color scheme of the room they are place in. Obviously different shapes and sizes of candle will need a specific candle holder to accommodate them.

More recently candles have evolved once again. Only recently I was out for dinner, at the restaurant they have light tea light candle holders on the tables, but instead of candles in them they were little flickering LEDs. They do look pretty good, but they really don’t compare to the real thing, there’s something magical about the flickering of the flame. As with most things, candles have progressed with the times and the available technology, though in this case it may not be a great thing.
