More than Just Cheap Curtains

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

Decorating your windows with cheap curtains can be a blast. All it takes is a smart choice of good color combinations and a little touch of elegance with decorative valances or toppers. With high-quality cheap curtains, you won’t have to worry about ending up with cheap-looking draperies on your windows.

Unlike the pricier types of curtain fabrics such as thick linens, taffeta silk, or velvet, cheap curtains can come in polyester, rayon, cotton, or even jute. These highly durable materials, as cheap as they are, are perhaps the most underrated fabrics in the market today. Because with a little touch of creativity and an artistic sense of style, you can transform these cheap curtain fabrics into an embodiment of sophistication right in your home. For example, sheer curtains made from rayon have always been one of the first choices when it comes to decorating your windows during summer. They let sunshine in, scattering light as it passes through the loosely woven fibers, thus creating a diffused lighting effect. Sheer curtains can also come from loosely woven polyester, which is an equally durable material to work with.

Fabrics made from cotton are of course, always very popular anytime of the year. During winter, you can add multiple layers of curtain linings for better insulation. But during summer, you can tuck away the extra linings to allow sunlight and fresh air to pass through the fabric.

As for color combinations, you can mix light pastels with dark scarf valances, or you can go for all-white or beige curtain linings, enhanced with pencil pleats or French pleats to make your rather monotonous-looking curtain come alive with curves and textures.

Who says that getting these cheap curtains can be seasonal? With a multitude of online shops that offer high-quality cheap curtains, you can score great deals year-round. And you can even find better deals with other types of window coverings such as vertical blinds, venetian blinds, or honeycomb blinds. Cheap curtains are definitely the answer to your quest in searching for those decorative window coverings that stand out with their affordability and style.

Simple Trick To Getting Perfectly Sized Runner Rugs

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

Runners are a type of floor rugs that are often used in areas which are long and narrow. They make great floor coverings for spaces like your hallways, entryways and bathroom, but they can also be used in the many large areas in your home like your living room, kitchen or bedroom.

Often times, people make the mistake of getting runner rugs that are too long or too short for their hallways. Both looks are truly unattractive. Did you know that there is a neat trick that you can use in order for you to get the most perfectly sized runner for your hallway? With these simple rules to follow, you will end up with a runner that is just right. It will frame your hallway and will not overwhelm it.

So the first thing that you need to do is to measure the hallway.try to get exact measurements so that you can find the best sized runner. Now from the width of your hallway, you have to subtract 4 inches. This will give you the ideal width size. So if your hallway measurements are 40 inches, you should get a runner that is 36 inches wide. Why subtract 4 inches and not 5 or 6? Well, 4 inches will give you a nice 2 inch space between each side of your runner and the wall. 2 inches is a good amount of space for the framing effect.

Now for the ideal runner length, you do the same thing but this time to the length of your hallway. From the length of your hallway, you should now subtract 22 inches. Still using the same principle as above, this time you will get 11 inches on each end of your runner rug.

This neat trick and simple rule of thumb will help you get the most ideal sized runner rug for your hallway.

Concrete Staining

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration, Garden

Concrete can be acid stained or painted in many different colors and decorative patterns. Decorative patterns can be anything that the home owner wants. However, it is a good idea to keep in mind how the pattern will fit in with the appearance of the rest of the home.

Acid staining can bring out the artist in home owners. This type of staining is permanent because it etches the concrete and does not fade, peel, or chip.

Stamped overlays can be applied over existing concrete, and can duplicate, slate, brick, wood or stone. They are usable for interiors or exteriors. However, a professional should be consulted to insure that the floor can be resurfaced.

Concrete floors are as durable as any stone or slate floor and with proper maintenance will last for many years. They do not require a lot of maintenance but like any floor they do need to be cleaned occasionally and this can be done easily with soap and water most of the time.

Floors built with concrete will last for many years much longer than wooden floors and cost a lot less to maintain.

One of the main questions about concrete floors is are they cold. The answer to that is yes and no. Concrete has the ability of storing temperature. The concrete temperature is affected by the temperature of the ground. In the summer the soil keeps the concrete cool and in the winter it helps warm the concrete. In addition to the ground the concrete will also store the heat or cold air coming from your A/C unit. These factors keep decorative concrete floors pleasant all year.

A concrete floor is a good alternative to carpet for anyone who has allergies. And with a radiant floor, heat is delivered through the floors evenly throughout the house.

They are eco-friendly and are good for any green construction project. The floors are non-slip surfaces, which helps to avoid falls for children or pets playing in the house. And since it is much less likely to have dust mites or other allergy causing factors such as pet hair it is much healthier for everyone.

Decorate Your Table With A Bud Vase

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

The idea of a bud vase is to enhance a dull area by having just one or two, maybe even three cuts of young flowers or buds in a small vase. The flowers that are added into to these sometime trendy little vases should generally be open flowers that are bright and colourful, preferably with a nice aroma. The vases come in a fantastic variety of shapes but are mainly clear and see-through or just plain white. Other colours are available, depending on what material is used.

Most of the bud vases made around the world are made from glass, crystal, porcelain or even plastic. The glass vases can be blown into many different shapes of either transparent or stained colours such as red, blue or yellow. The porcelain vase will usually be white. No matter what the vases are made from, they must all we watertight and able to stand up right and hold the flowers.

The single cuts of flowers can stay good and look healthy for a few days. Many of the vases are used as a feature on tables at weddings or as little gifts for people that maybe staying in hospital. They are also a popular choice on restaurant tables with candles nearby, lighting them in the evening.  They are usually associated with more formal events but it doesn’t mean that you can’t fill a vase yourself with a rose or two and keep it on your desk at home as they do brighten up any area.

The thing to make sure you don’t do is to over-fill the bud vase with too much water, as it will easily spill when you move it. A handy hint to keep the flowers fresh for a lot longer is if you have spare room in a fridge that isn’t used for opened food (for hygiene reasons) and at the end of the night, simply pop the flowers which are in the vases into the cool fridge overnight until you want them out the next day.

If you live in a warmer climate, the flowers will dry out quicker, but taking advantage of this hint could see you not having to cut so many flowers too often and will slow the decaying time, therefore keeping its great appearance lasting for longer.

Loft Interior Design

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

Part of the appeal of a large and spacious interior is the millions of possibilities that you can explore to alter it, and to make it functional and beautiful. A loft in the city is a perfect canvass for colors, silhouettes and patterns to come together and create a harmonious and comfortable home for a busy and successful urban dweller. As the occupant of the space, you must be able to determine what you want out of it and maximize its design potential. The first thing that you have to consider in loft interior design is the size and shape of the space. This will give you an empty plan to start with and from this, the best and most feasible layout should emerge. The interior spaces such as the dining area, living area, kitchen and bedroom must be situated in their most ideal location so that activities within the loft can be regulated, well-organized and systematic.

Even the most eclectic and chaotic-looking space has a functional layout that is specifically designed for the occupant of the space. They are specific to the personal needs of the occupant and cannot compare to a different design of another loft which also caters to an occupant with distinct needs and wants. No two persons are alike. This is the principle behind creating the right kind of space for every complex and one-of-a-kind individual out there.

The challenge in planning a loft lies in the proper allocation of the space and in finding interior design materials that will be appropriate for the division of each area. Full length transparent glass walls can create the illusion of continuous space covering multiple areas, however this presents delicate privacy issues for the occupant. If he is living alone, then perhaps this can work, but if he’s sharing the space with his family or friends, then certain privacy requirements should be tackled and given fair attention. Other materials that are more private in nature are textured opaque glass, floor to ceiling curtains, folding screens or panels and solid or laminate wood sliding doors and panels. They can be very creative alternatives to the common gypsum board or ply board wall.

Depending on the interior theme that the occupant has chosen for the loft, the furniture pieces and accessories must be carefully selected. Lofts are wide and roomy and this advantageous quality should be maximized by using contemporary furniture pieces that are light weight and also light in structure. They should be the modified and streamlined versions of the classic furniture pieces if the occupant happens to love the art and culture of the past. Basically, any design theme can work in a loft.  It will only be a matter of regulating their specific styles and placements while choosing the ones that will emphasize the beautiful indoor structure of the space.

Nature Wallpaper For Every Season

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

You can update your wallpaper according to your fancy, but since it could easily cost hundreds of dollars every time you want to replace it, it is easier on the wallet to stick to one classic theme that doesn’t get old or fade with time. Also, with the wallpaper dominating the greater part of a room, harmony has to be considered so the wallpaper doesn’t clash with the room’s purpose. With that in mind, selecting a wallpaper reminiscent of nature can be just that classic touch you are looking for.

A nature wallpaper is the perfect way to bring any season into your own home. You just need to decide what effect you are looking for, and start shopping!

One classic nature-inspired wallpaper is the Japanese cherry blossom. In Japan, cherry blossoms herald the advent of spring, but their delicate pink and white blooms contrasting with the brown branches still reminds you of the coolness of winter. You could have a forest of cherry blossom trees or a lone tree for a calm, minimalist feel. This could go well in a bedroom or a modern living room.

Autumn leaves are another wall decor favorite. The vibrant reds, oranges and browns of the leaves can cover up an entire room and exude a feeling of warmth even if they do mean the nippiness of the fall season. A perfect year-round wallpaper due to its balance of coolness and warmth.

If you crave warmth in the frigid months of winter, why not put up a tropical wallpaper? Imagine escaping the cold and recapturing your fondest summer memories for a few moments by gazing out into the sea, right in your own living room or your ocean-inspired bedroom.

Of course we cannot forget the timeless classic spring flowers, which have always been a popular wallpaper choice. Vibrant and full of life, bright flowers can dispel the gloom and liven up any room. Select flower patterns, or even a wallpaper mural of a field of flowers, and feel the spring any time of the year.

You can also put up pictures of waterfalls or green forests for a calming effect, animals in the wild for warmth, and maybe a canopy of stars for relaxation. Photo wallpapers are available from many sellers, but if you don’t like their choices, you can use your own and have custom wallpapers made.

Nature in any season is astoundingly beautiful, and even when we cannot enjoy it at the moment, we are lucky enough to have the technology to remind us of its beauty in our own homes.

What You Should Know Concerning Black Galaxy Granite

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

Black Galaxy granite (or Gabbroic Anorthosite to geologists) is a granite stone that has become one possibly the most popular stones around the world, popular for the dramatic appearance created by the black stone, with golden flecks from the mineral Enstatine (bronzite), when applied to a large commercial building or special rooms in private homes. The amount available is finite. It originally came from only one area in the world, Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, India. The stone’s export started in the 1960′s. Additional granite deposits now are being quarried in other countries, including Iran, Spain, Canada and Brazil.

One reason decomposed granite is popular is the fact that no two slabs are alike. The demand currently exceeds the supply, despite the discovery of more sources outside of India. The high demand has created a corresponding spike in the asking price for this particular granite’s wonderful pattern and color.

In addition to the gold flecks from the bronzite, many slabs come with varying amounts of veining. The veins add more interest and variety, but many have the incorrect notion that the veins are a weakness in the stone. Veining does not compromise stone durability and strength, but because of this misinformation, Black Galaxy granite with veins is priced less than un-veined slabs of rock. Some slabs of granite are pitted. The degree of pitting seems related to the depth at which they were found. Stones with heavy pitting normally come from the top 30-60 feet of a dug-down quarry. Less pitting is found in granite quarried at sites elevated about 164-230 feet above the surrounding ground level.

Oftentimes buyers order a beautiful black galaxy granite counter top for their home’s kitchen or bathroom. In certain lighting, or after seeing the granite day after day they notice circle or half-circle marks that appear to be scratches, and wonder if they received defective granite or damaged granite. These marks are normal. They are produced during the type of polishing done to all polished granites. The marks are circular due to the shape of the wheel that accomplishes the polishing. The difference is that the marks are more apparent on black galaxy granite than lighter or busier patterns of granite.

Buyers also need to be aware that retailers should not claim they have done anything to improve the granite–”enhancers” do not work and if anything was added, it will not endure like actual granite does. Any such claims should be a red flag to any shopper that this retailer is not trustworthy or does not know what they are talking about.

This is your black galaxy decomposed granite basic course, that hopefully will help you pick out the best deal and the best granite. Enjoy your shopping adventure with this beautiful, exciting product of the amazing forces of nature.

What Carpet Lovers Should Know about Tavertine Floor Tiles

Posted by Modern Homes in Decoration

If you would love to have a Persian carpet in you home, then you ought to consider investing in some Tavertine floor tiles. Those stone tiles create a floor that resembles the stone floor found in many Iranian homes. The surface of such a floor represents the ideal surface for a Persian carpet. Such a surface would never cause a Persian rug to gather up in spots, as it tends to do on some surfaces.

Keep in mind, too, the fact that a Persian rug can last a very long time. Therefore, the floor under that rug should be equally durable. A Tavertine floor demonstrates marked durability. At the same time, such a floor provides the homeowner with the ability to select from a variety of styles. A Tavertine floor can be given either an antique or a more modern look.

In addition, every floor filled with Tavertine tiles also has well constructed molding. The molding helps to insulate the floor of the room. Moreover, the person who has ordered the Tavertine tiles can choose from among several different colors of molding. That way the material on the side of the wall is sure to blend with the tiles on the floor.

Now Persians make a habit of removing their shoes at the door, in order to keep the home’s carpets clean. Of course, the dirt from those shoes does get on the floor, and thus on the tiles. Thus, the homeowner needs to use an effective floor cleaner. Thankfully, a strong and effective cleaning agent does not harm the materials in a typical stone floor.

Tavertine tiles can be used outdoors as well as indoors. If you happen to have an outdoor sauna, you might want to decorate the area around it with Tavertine tiles. You would thus manage to create a sauna that resembles the beautiful baths found in ancient Egypt.
