Bringing Outdoor Elegance into your Bathroom with a Teak Shower Bench

Posted by Modern Homes in Showers

Wood is a common element in many homes because of its ability to bring an elegant and yet natural looking feel to any room in the home. Wood pieces of furniture are commonly seen in home design ideas for outdoor patios and balconies, or for formal rooms in the home like the living room, dining room, or a home library. A bathroom is usually not a good place to put in wood furniture, because they can be big and bulky, and wood generally does not do well in places with high levels of moisture. With a teak shower bench, however, you can now bring the elegance of wood into your bathroom.

Teak is the perfect kind of wood for a bathroom. It is the only type of wood that can stand moisture and humidity inside your bathroom. Most types of wood will mold or disintegrate when exposed to the atmosphere like that of a bathroom, but teak contains natural oils that allow it to withstand and remain durable.

Teak changes its color once it has been exposed to a high level of moisture, and even becomes more elegant looking afterwards. You can, however, preserve the original lighter color of teak by brushing your teak shower bench with a light coat of wood varnish.

Teak, unlike other types of wood, is also immune to termite attacks, so you can be sure that your teak shower bench will last you a very long time. It also requires little maintenance because it does not easily acquire mold and mildew, so you will be able to save yourself a lot of time cleaning. Many home stores also offer foldable teak shower benches that can save you storage space.

Having a teak shower bench in your shower area can be an added safety precaution, especially if you have an elderly person using the shower. Elderly people can sit on the teak shower bench so that they do not have to stand while showering, and so the risk of slipping and other accidents is greatly reduced.

Give Yourself Better Access To The Shower With Curved Bath Shower Screens

Posted by Modern Homes in Showers

Sometimes, getting in and out of a shower can be difficult. If this is the case then switching the type of shower screen may be a quick and easy solution. Making the switch to folding shower screens is the most practical for elderly people or those with physical disabilities as the screen folds back to offer a large entrance and exit to the shower stall.

Glass shower screens are also convenient. The glass screens do not have the capability of folding out of the way as much but offer practicality, good looks, and easy maintenance. Another type of shower screen that has recently come onto the market are curved shower screens. When pulled back, these essentially disappear and allow lots of space for people to get in and out of the shower. Right now, these are hot items in the area of home bathroom design.

Where To Buy Shower Screens

Now that a homeowner has decided to change out their shower screens, it is time to put in some time doing research on the internet to find just the right one. There are many websites out there dedicated to shower screens. Obviously, budget plays a big role in the selection but one can find just about every style of shower screen even with a limited budget. If there are concerns about the safety of having glass in the shower then don’t worry. All the glass used in bathrooms today is safety glass.

Installing Your New Shower Screen

Installing most shower screens is an easy one day DIY project for most. The installation instructions must be followed to the tee otherwise water can leak into the bathroom and cause damage. If for some reason the homeowner does not feel comfortable installing the screens themselves then a professional should be called in. There is no sense in wasting all that money used to purchase the shower screens just to have them ripped and and re-installed.

An Inside Look At Outdoor Shower Room Options

Posted by Modern Homes in Showers

A shower has been an integral feature of homes since ancient times. However, despite its importance, accessing an internal bathing area from outside has, at times, left a trail of mud and other underfoot debris around the home. Fortunately, as many discerning homeowners soon discovered, this problem can be easily solved with an outdoor shower room.

As the term suggests, an outdoor shower room is primarily installed adjacent to a patio, mudroom or next to the front/rear entrance of a home. It can be hooked up to the water supply system of the house in the same way as done with a hosepipe. Insofar as shower heads, the external shower unit can be equipped with either a conventional model, or one that that is detachable. For added convenience, customers have the benefit of a wide range of shower room accessories to choose from. Outdoor bathing cabins are flexible in that they can be used for two purposes – for a complete shower, or for a quick wash up before stepping into the house.

Depending on their individual needs, homeowners cab either build a permanent (fixed) shower cabin, or buy a portable shower room which is comparatively more convenient and less expensive. The latter option often comes with its own water storage tank, so connecting to a water source is not essential. As portable models are light, they can be easily relocated to other places if infrequently used.

An outdoor bathing cabin is an excellent concept for beachfront homes. This is because it prevents sand from entering the home and dirtying floors when people, especially children, return after trips to the beach. For that matter, anybody returning dirty from work or play will find it particularly useful.

If you have finally decided to add a fixed or portable outdoor shower room to your home, consult a contractor you know, or a friend or relative who has already installed one. They will be more than happy to provide you with valuable tips and advice on the best way to get started. Alternatively, visit reputable home improvement stores to look at the many portable shower models on display. Of course, instead of shuttling between stores, you can always go online and view an even wider collection of outdoor shower options. This way you will also have the opportunity to compare prices, make direct contact with vendors, and get the best price deals. More often than not, some of these suppliers may have unique and inexpensive shower room accessories that may not be available at local retail outlets.

Corner Shower Trays And Other Storage Options For Your Bathroom

Posted by Modern Homes in Showers

Having the right shower organizer can be a challenge, whether you live in a small apartment, or a large home, and the shape and size of your shower will determine which organizing solution might work best for you. A shower stall, for example, will have less potential space than a larger walk-in shower.

Corner shower trays are an ideal and practical organizing solution if your shower is a small stall type of design, that has little additional room. These trays are often held in place by a vertical pole that runs from the floor to the top of the shower stall and they can have adjustable shelves, or more commonly fixed shelves. These shelving units take up as little space as possible, yet still provide a place to keep soap, shampoos and all the other stuff you need. However, they do need to be cleaned regularly, otherwise they tend to attract mold and soap scum.

If you have a bath that does double duty as a shower, low profile shower trays are probably your best option, as they provide plenty of storage space but do not take up much room. They can be adjusted to fit any size of bath, and they can also be moved easily, although they do need to be cleaned regularly.

If you are lucky enough to have a shower with plenty of space, walk in shower trays may be the best option. They are easy to clean and can be removed. They have plenty of room and can hold everything that you need. They are also easier to clean than other types of shower tray and are typically of high quality.

You may not spend much time in the shower, but it is important time, where you should be able to relax or plan your day. Having everything organized and easy to reach is essential, and the proper shower organizer can make a big difference.

How to Gauge and Compare the Energy Efficiency of Hot Tubs

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

People considering buying hot tubs are often advised to ensure that the tubs they eventually purchase are reasonably energy efficiency. This is sound advice, for as many have come to learn the hard way (through experience), the long term running costs of a hot tub can end up being substantially higher than the initial purchase costs. That is particularly likely to be the case for folks who buy tubs that are not energy efficient: as these end up consuming a lot of electrical energy, thus driving their owners’ electricity bills to astronomical levels. In fact, many people who buy these sorts of items on a regular basis have come to a point where they’d rather pay more for hot tubs, and be assured that it would be energy efficient, than paying less for a hot tub which turns out to be very poor in terms of energy efficiency.

Against that sort of background, many people express an interest in knowing how exactly they can gauge and compare the energy efficiency of the various hot tubs they consider buying. That is what we now venture to look at. And we come to learn that the energy efficiency of a hot tub can be easily determined by looking at its:

Water heater: it emerges that there are some tubs (actually majority of the tubs) where the water is heated internally, through an incorporated water heater. The alternative to these are the tubs which draw already heated water from the main systems supplying hot water to the houses in which they are being used. But where the water is heated through an incorporated heater, that is likely to be the main area where most of the power in the hot tub system is used. We all know that the systems where electricity is required to heat things up tend to consume it voraciously.

What is worth noting though, is the fact that different types of water heaters tend to consume electricity at different rates, and subsequently have different energy efficiency ratings. The people selling the hot tubs whose heaters are not very energy efficient will try to distract you from that issue, by telling you of the ‘superior’ insulation systems they have used and other such things. But it is upon you to overlook all that, and first take a closer look at the water heater incorporated onto the hot tub, with particular interest on its energy efficiency.

Pump: most hot tub systems incorporate pumps, and these use up quite a bit of energy. But just as is the case with the water heaters, some of the pumps are more energy efficient than others. By checking out the type of pump incorporated onto a hot tub, and researching to find out what its energy efficiency ratings are like, you can tell whether the hot tub onto which the pump is attached is, by extension, energy efficient or not.

Insulation: this determines how fast (or slowly) the water in the tub will be losing heat. The more superior the insulation used in a hot tub, the more energy efficient the hot tub is likely to be. But insulation plays a relatively small role in determining the overall energy efficiency of the hot tub. It is things like the energy efficiency (or otherwise) of the heaters and pumps used which largely determine the efficiency of hot tubs. Yet insulation can’t be ignored either. That leads us to a situation where the most energy efficient hot tubs are those which come with efficient heaters, efficient pumps and proper insulation.

Do It Yourself Bathroom Mold Removal

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

Mold can be notorious when it comes to bathrooms. With the constant moisture from showering, bathing, toilet flushing in a small space, it’s the perfect breeding ground for mold growth. And where there’s a fungus problem, there’s the need for mold removal.

Before you begin however, you’ll want to repair any leaks or problems that may have caused the growth in the first place. The number one reasons for mold growth is moisture. They thrive on it and will continue to thrive until you fix the source of the moisture problem.

Then, assess whether you need to hire a professional to do the work or if you can do the job yourself. As a general rule anything more than 10 square feet of damage needs the help of a professional.

If the damage is minimal enough you can do it yourself, you’ll need to get rid of the growth using a bathroom mold removal product. You’ll want to avoid using standard household bleach since the chemical fumes can be harmful to your health and bleaching the mold won’t permanently kill it anyway.

In addition, you’ll want to be sure to invest in a good pair of rubber gloves, paper surgical mask and eye goggles for the cleanup. You may also need to purchase a plastic sheet to block off areas of the room that haven’t been affected by the toxic fungus. And, although it may seem like a good idea to circulate the air, avoid running any fans during the cleanup process as it can cause the spores from the mold to spread to other parts of your home.

Next, follow the directions provided by the manufacturer of the bathroom mold removal product. Then, once you’ve thoroughly cleaned and removed all traces of the black fungus, you should open windows if the weather is permitting and use fans to dry out the room. Also, a dehumidifier may be helpful in removing moisture from the air if you have one.

And finally, when it comes to bathrooms, it’s often best to skip using wallpaper on your walls since it can trap moisture and allows for the perfect area for mold to grow. Instead, you might want to consider using tiles on the walls painting them with a paint that is resistant to mold to help minimize moisture on the walls and prevent the further need for mold removal or more serious problems that may lead to needing the help of a professional.

What To Consider Before Buying Bathroom Light Fixtures

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

If you’re planning on upgrading your bathroom, or building a new one from scratch, one of the most important choices you have to make is on the type of light fixtures you are going to install. More than perhaps in any other room, the choice you make will have a significant effect on whether your overall design ends up as a success or as a failure.

Bathrooms are often the most functional room in the house, and as such it’s important that the lighting is up to the tasks that we use the room for. What we want from our bathroom lighting, however, differs greatly throughout the day. In the morning, we might need a bright natural light to wake us up and help us to get ready for a busy day at work; in the evening we might prefer a more subdued light while we unwind with a soak in the tub. Our light fixtures have to be able to cope with all situations.

Many people chose to fit a single light in the center of the room, and make do with just that. The trouble is, though, that you can often only vary the intensity of the light by changing the bulb. Also, if you’re standing at a mirror, you’ll find that you’re standing in your own light and creating a shadow. There are a huge range of bathroom vanity light fixtures that can help overcome this issue – from having lights built into the mirror; to having wall lights fixed either side. If you ensure that the lights are powered from a separate switch from the main light, you have a great way of varying the mood of the room depending on which lights you turn on.

A popular choice these days are led illuminated bathroom mirrors. As the name suggests, this type of mirror is illuminated by a number of tiny led lights embedded into it. As the lights are so small, and there are usually a large number of them, the effect can be stunning – think backstage at Broadway, and you’re the star of the show!

So, chose the right light fixtures and you can transform any bathroom from clinical functional space into a high-end luxury spa. Give your ‘smallest room’ the biggest wow factor.

Three Big Complaints About Custom Built Bedroom Furniture

Posted by Modern Homes in Bathroom

Most owners like their custom built bedroom furniture. However, even the most rabid fans of the fitted bedroom will admit that their bespoke wardrobes are not perfect. One big problem is the somewhat formidable price tag. Snobs will say it separates the haves from the have-nots. But more than a few middle-class customers of this type of furniture have the costs included as part of their home purchase loan, and some pay for it using a home renovation loan. Either way, the first scratch is a truly heart-rending event. So is the second, from personal experience. Admittedly, after a year or two, most of us become somewhat inured to it, although those of us who inherit the “handyman” genes from our forefathers have an advantage because we know how to touch it up again.

The second complaint is not quite so easy to resolve. Custom bedroom furniture is not something you can pick up and move around, especially not the fitted wardrobe. If you suddenly discover that it is occupying valuable real estate in your bedroom, there isn’t really anything you can do about it. About the only thing you can do is to pay the designer who built your wardrobe to switch from a hinged door to a sliding door. This will free up some of the space normally allocated for the door to swing out when you open your wardrobe. Obviously, this trick only works if you do not already have a sliding door wardrobe.

Not many people buy custom kids bedroom furniture. There is good reason for this. Good custom made bedroom furniture can last two or three decades, maybe even longer, in an adult’s bedroom. But children are notoriously hard on furniture. Furniture in a child’s bedroom may need to be replaced within a few years due to excessive wear and tear. This is a terrible waste when you have custom designed wardrobes installed, as more than one parent has discovered. It’s as if you bought a Rolex, then frequently got involved in bar-room brawls, and now want to toss it away because it is battered. Doesn’t exactly exhibit good common sense.

Custom built bedroom furniture should be considered an investment. It is an integral part of your house, and should be carefully thought out before you commit yourself.

More people are having new and beautifully designed vanity units installed to enhance the look of their design theme. This popularity and demand has resulted in a massive array of styles, shapes and sizes. In terms of style you can choose the homely rustic bathroom vanity or the ultra cool and sophisticated glass vessel vanity. Whatever, your tastes a well chosen vanity sink will make your bathroom look more appealing and unique.

An important consideration when choosing a sink vanity is the size. Many people choose a vanity unit that is too big for their bathroom because they want the extra storage. However, if it is too big it will look out of proportion with the other bathroom furniture and spoil the look. Therefore, make sure you get the size right. For smaller and unconventional spaces, bathroom corner vanities offer a practical space saving solution. The corners units design has a tapered edge at the back. This enables it to fit neatly into a corner wall. In this way the vanity will not protrude out as much and take up less of your limited floor space.

How Are Shower Screens Different from Shower Doors?

Posted by Modern Homes in Showers

There are a few reasons why the modern shower screen is gradually replacing traditional shower doors. Already popular in the U.K., France and Germany shower screens are making inroads into the United States, frequently seen in five-star hotels and interior design magazines. Part of the appeal is functional, and part of it is aesthetic.

Variations aside, the essence of a shower screen is a sheet of glass perched on or slightly above the ledge of a shower or bathtub. Instead of spanning the full length of the shower or tub, it only extends more or less halfway. While they’re sometimes fixed on hinges that pivot, they’re often stationary, making them fundamentally different than swinging or sliding shower doors. Their partial spanning lets the user simply walk through the open half without having to swing or slid open anything.

Shower screens are available in frameless and semi-frameless versions. Both types have no support fixtures on at least two sides (usually the left and top edges). Frameless shower screens get their support entirely from one side, using two hinges screwed into the wall. Since the tempered glass screens can be quite heavy (up to 72 lbs.), frameless versions are more appropriate for custom shower enclosures, since a contractor may have to insert a stud behind the wall where the hinges are to be mounted.

A frameless shower screen also gets support from a pair of hinges in the wall, but a stud may not be necessary, since the screen gets additional support from a hinge that runs along the bottom edge. In some cases, it may be mounted with an aquarium corner instead of a hinge. While frameless screens float a half-inch above the shower ledge, and are thus often considered more aesthetically appealing, semi-frameless screens, having contact with the ledge via the hinge, are offer better water containment.

Proper installation is also something you should think about when you are out to buy bathroom tiles. Some tiles are easily installed. In fact, you can install them yourself. Others need experts to handle and place them properly to where you want them to be. You should also consider this in your budgeting. You should think about how much labor for the installation could cost.
