Getting Dishwasher Parts On Sale

Posted by Modern Homes in Appliances

The best time to buy dishwashers is when they are on sale because then, the price is affordable, even for the top models. But what happens when some part of your dishwasher that you recently purchased from a dishwashers on sale store gets damaged, do you need to buy a new one? The answer to this is a big No! Dishwasher parts are very much in the market. They provide a cheaper option by making it possible to replace only the damaged part of the washer and everything is back to normal. You do not have to replace the entire washer each time it breaks down. Dishwasher parts can be bought from most appliance, retail or home improvement stores, both online and offline. Many stores readily provide information or assistance in finding the right replacement part for your dishwasher, and some will even install it at no extra charge.

Some of the dishwasher parts available in the market include

-       In-Sink-Erator DWC-00 Dishwasher Connector Kit –  this is used to connect the  dishwasher and the food disposer

-       Small Items Bag – this is a dishwasher part, mostly black in colour and made of mesh material. It is used to hold small items during cleaning so that they do not get lost in the machine as the cleaning progresses. It is used for such small items like knives, cutters, peelers, lids and spoons. For example, we have the Whirlpool 8519716 small items bag that is easily found on sale.

-       Drain Solenoid Kit – this is used in the drain area of the dishwasher to enable better drainage. The kit contains screws, an “E” ring and a bracket. The GE WD21X10060 kit can be used on almost any dishwasher model.

-       Drain pump – the drain pump is a dishwasher part that you are likely to keep replacing. One of the dishwasher drain pump models you are likely to come across is the GE WD19X10015 dishwasher drain pump.

-       Water inlet valve – this part is found on the left leg brace of most dishwashers and at some point, it may need to be replaced. It is easy to install even by yourself.

It is important that the parts are installed properly for your dishwasher to be restored to its proper functioning state. You can install the part yourself with the help of a manual or you could get a plumber or someone from the store to do it for you. The installation instructions should be followed to the letter so that you do not end up causing more damage to your dishwasher or having to start the whole installation process all over again. Each time a new dishwasher part is installed, ensure that the washer is working alright before resuming your normal dish cleaning activities. A handy and cost effective buying tip is for you to ask for dishwasher replacement parts each time you buy dishwashers on sale. The same could be applied to getting washing machines on sale.

Oil Burner Not Working – Try This First!

Posted by Modern Homes in Appliances

Your oil burner has went out!  Its the middle of the winter.  What should you do?  These things are bound to happen.  Quite frankly, these devices last a long time but like any machine they have a shelf life and will need to be replaced eventually.  Nevertheless, here are some quick diagnostic tips you can try that may make it possible for you to avoid an expensive HVAC repairman’s house call.

Push The Reset Button

This is an easy fix.  There is a good chance that the reason your burner is not coming is because the reset button (usually red) was tripped.  When this happen the whole system will shut down.  Its not a bad thing.  It means the safety systems in place are doing their job.  Push the tiny red button.  You cannot miss it.  There is a good chance everything will start right up.  If it happens again and again though do not keep pushing the reset button.  That is an indication that something more serious is going on.

Do You Have Fuel

Seems like a silly question but you would not believe how many homeowners do not check their supply of heating oil on a regular basis.  Your holding tank could either be totally empty or low enough to the point where the fuel pump cannot pump any oil into its system.

Fuel Pump

Speaking on your fuel pump this is the third item you should check.  Is it running?  Your oil burner will not work if there is no fuel getting to the system.  You might need a new pump.  Try lightly hitting it and seeing if it comes on.

Clogged Oil Filter

The filter is made to clean out any extra debris or condensation for your heating oil before it clogs up your burner.  It needs to be changed once a year.  If you have not done so try this.  Perhaps there is a blockage and no oil has been able to get through.

Nozzle Clogged

The nozzle attached to the end of the burner in which fuel is sprayed out of can be blocked very easily.  There is a screen on one end of it but that does not trap everything it should.  This device, though seemingly insignificant, needs to be replaced once a year.  It could be the reason that your oil burner is sputtering or not working like it should.

These are five easy troubleshooting tips that your typical homeowner can check himself.  There are many other reasons that your oil burner may not be working or not working as efficiently as its designed.  Please visit this website if you need service.  Its designed to cover everything related to oil burners and waste oil heaters.

Is A Microwave Stand Right For Your Kitchen?

Posted by Modern Homes in Appliances, Kitchen

If you’re like many homeowners with a small or medium sized kitchen, you’ve probably run out of space to organize your things. With small appliances, fruit, spices, and a microwave taking up most of your counter space, there’s not much left to actually prepare food. Microwave stand’s are a simple two legged shelf that solve this problem by raising your microwave to a more desirable 8-10 inches above your counters. This also frees up the space below your microwave to store all of the things that have been cluttering up your counters.

Although they solve a similar problem, microwave carts take up much more room than a microwave stand. A microwave cart is a stand alone unit, usually with wheels that is designed for medium sized kitchens or business break rooms. They have a large top shelf for holding your microwave, but also have extra storage, drawers, cabinets, or sometimes hook for hanging pans and other cookware. The difference between a microwave stand and a microwave cart is that the cart is essentially an extension of your counters. Without the extra square footage to support the cart when it’s not in use, it will only get in the way.

Usually, the square footage of your kitchen will determine if a microwave cart or stand is better for you. If you have an extremely small kitchen, and want a better way to organize your clutter, a microwave stand will give you about 3 square feet of extra space to work with. However, if you have a large kitchen, but limited counterspace, a microwave cart can extend those items on to a stand alone unit that can even be put away when not in use for the ultimate de-cluttering of your kitchen. Both solutions will give you more space to prepare food, but each has a different way of accomplishing the same solution.

New Options With LED Spotlights

Posted by Modern Homes in Appliances, Lighting

Ok, so you know how LED lamps are super energy efficient, prevent wastage of precious natural resources and save a huge amount of money. But they also open up some other interesting possibilities.

Many people have low voltage lighting installed in their home these days, especially for running recessed down lights where the trade off for stepping down the voltage (from about 220 to 12 volts) is an increase in the current (amps).

Now the thing about sending a higher current to a conventional incandescent light bulb is that you then require a thicker filament (otherwise it would burn out in short order) and this has the fortuitous effect of making the light appear brighter and distinctly more sparkly.

But the point about an LED light bulb is that it doesn’t work by heating up a metal filament, so one of the main reasons for using a low voltage supply (brighter lights) no longer applies. So, although you could replace existing low voltage (MR16) spot lamps with LED equivalents, which would then entail also changing all the transformers to LED drivers as well, the obvious benefit is missing. There are also disadvantages, such as, for a start, sourcing suitable sized drivers and matching everything up if dimmer switches are also an issue.

A better option when switching over to LED for an existing low voltage lighting circuit though is to simply remove the transformers altogether. In their place, connect GU10 base lamp holders and install LED GU10 spotlights that run directly from the mains voltage electrical supply. These are in fact still low voltage light bulbs, but the transformer/driver is an integral part of the onboard electronics which obviates the need for an external solution.

The result is a much simpler lighting system (fewer components) that still delivers bright, energy saving light. Also, unlike their traditional halogen counterparts, you can expect LED GU10 bulbs to last twenty years or more before thinking about replacing them.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Gas Fireplace

Posted by Modern Homes in Appliances

As anyone who has recently visited a fireplace retailer can agree, the popularity of gas-burning fireplaces has increased rapidly over the last few years. Once smiled at for being “fake” fireplaces, their undeniable advantages have won over many potential buyers who had been skeptical at first. Before deciding for yourself whether a gas fireplace is the right choice for you, it is always helpful to take a quick look at the pros and cons of such an appliance.

First, consider the obvious advantages. Gas fireplaces are incredibly easy to operate compared to wood-burning models. Lighting and extinguishing them is as easy as flicking the on/off switch. They are also very efficient, especially the ventless models now available in a large variety of models, and have very low gas fireplace repair needs. Even direct vented models which can be placed anywhere close to an outside wall of the house have an efficiency many times that of a traditional wood fireplace.

There are, however, some disadvantages of using gas for heating purposes compared with other fuels. Gas is inefficient as a source of primary heating, as it will be difficult to heat a large number of rooms in the house with a single gas oven. Also, a gas fireplace needs significantly more space if used mainly for heating purposes compared to a modern central heating system.

Wood naturally still remains an important fuel for fireplaces, since it is easier to come by than gas in remote locations. Apart from this dependence on an available gas supply, the lack of a true campfire feel is also cited as a disadvantage of gas fireplaces. The smell, the wood-related work and the process of lighting a fire is certainly different for a gas fireplace, but outdoor models such as a portable gas fire pit go a long way towards achieving a similar look-and-feel.

In the end, the decision for or against a gas fireplace comes down to personal likes and dislikes. A gas fireplace is ideal for occasional use for recreation – if you however prefer a wood fireplace it will of course also be able to fulfill all desires. It simply needs a bit more work to do so.
